Blackbirds Brave Wet Weather for Metropolitan Championships

Piscataway, N.J. – The Long Island University men's and women's track and field teams braved the elements in Piscataway, N.J. over the weekend for the 2011 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships. Despite the conditions, the Blackbirds saw 17 top ten finishes en route to a seventh place finish for the men and a tenth place finish for the women.
 
Sophomore Brian Richards came up big for LIU in a number of events, starting with the 100-meter dash, where he came in first with a time of 11.01. Classmate Wilmot Stubblefield was fourth in the same event with a time of 11.17. Richards went on to pick up another silver in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 22.60.
 
Richards partnered with junior Robert Barnes, senior Samuel Egadu and senior Corryl Boyd for the 4x100-meter relay, where the team took gold with a time of 42.76.
 
Barnes picked up a seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash, racing to a 51.92. Sophomore Rogers Kipruto raced to 15th in the 1500-meter run, clocking in at 4:14.3.
 
In the field events, junior Amire Solomon took first in the long jump with a mark of 7.13 meters. Junior Paul Morton was 10th in the long jump with a mark of 5.98 meter and fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.96 meters. Freshman Steve Buscema greatly improved on his personal best in the javelin, throwing a 49.38m.
 
Sophomore Amber Mitchell led the women with two top ten finishes, including the 200-meter dash, where she was sixth clocking in at 23.08. In the long jump, junior Jessie Gaines was third with a mark of 5.55 meters while Mitchell was seventh, recording a mark of 5.26 meters.
 
The Blackbirds also had a strong showing in the 100-meter hurdles with junior Torrie Saunders taking third with a time of 14.6. Freshman Camille Thomas was sixth with a time of 15.3, while sophomore Tricia Beckles was seventh clocking in at 15.47. Junior Jazmin Waller cleared 1.62m in the high jump to earn fourth place.
 
LIU is back in action April 28-30 at the Penn Relays. The event takes place at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
