WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team had their 2017 season come to a close Friday afternoon, as the No. 2 seeded Blackbirds fell to No. 3 seed Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals, 6-0.
The Stags, looking to avenge a loss to LIU earlier in the season, took an early lead at So Sweet a Cat Field, scoring their first goal two minutes and 32 seconds into the game. Fairfied would score four more times in the first half, while not giving up a single goal. LIU managed to get just two shots on net in the first half, one of which was saved by Fairfield's keeper.
In the second half, LIU was able to hold the Stags to fewer shots and just two goals, but were not able to generate the offense needed to overcome the deficit. Fairfield would have the edge in all offensive categories, outshooting LIU 23-2, and registering seven penalty corners to LIU's zero.
Freshman
Jenna Chrabolowski had LIU's only shot on goal, while freshman
Eveline Gielisse had a defensive save for the Blackbirds. Sophomore goalkeeper
Molly Jannell finished the contest with 10 saves.
With the loss, LIU finishes the season 4-14 overall, and 4-2 in MAAC play.
