BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- For the second time this season, LIU Brooklyn women's swimming freshman Amanda San Juan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
San Juan garners her second rookie honors following her first two collegiate victories in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events, as she continues to impress in her debut season. She out-swam competitors from the Mount, St. Peter's and Manhattan at the NJIT Invitational in both events, as her 1000 free time of 10:51.89 ranks fourth in the NEC so far this season. She would later win the 500 freestyle in 5:19.84 to win that race by 2.25 to go two-for-two in the distance races. With San Juan as the leadoff leg in the 200 freestyle relay, the Blackbirds closed the meet in 1:41.65, to win over Mount by 1.14.
Overall, she notched two top-5 times and three in the top-10 as she also swam well in an exhibition with Columbia two days prior. She took third in the 200 butterfly event, slotting in as the NEC's fourth best time so far again, clocking in at 2:12.56.
The Blackbirds (5-0) will put their early season 5-0 mark on the line on Saturday with a double dual meet at LIU Pool against Stony Brook and NEC rival Sacred Heart. The meet will kickoff at 12:00 p.m.
