BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's swimming team will put a 5-0 dual meet record on the line on Saturday when they face Stony Brook and Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart in a double-dual meet at the LIU Pool at 12 p.m
BLACKBIRDS SWEEP NJIT INVITATIONAL
LIU Brooklyn Women's Swimming team won all eleven swim events to easily beat Manhattan, Mount St. Mary's and Saint Peter's last Sunday at the quad-dual NJIT Invitational last Sunday in Newark. With a three-event limit for individuals (including relays), the Blackbirds' Amanda Peren, Amanda San Juan, Jeanne Touchette-McGowan, Briana Vega each won two events, while Noemie Lacroix-Moreau earned the remaining individual win in the 100 butterfly. Those five combined with Lydia Amon, Mads Carrigan, Addison Donahue and Nathalie Meyers to win both relay events in the single day meet.
SAN JUAN EARNS NEC ROOKIE HONORS
Freshman Amanda San Juan won her first two individual races of her career at NJIT and won the NEC Rookie of the Week for the second time in the process. She out-swam competitors from the Mount, St. Peter's and Manhattan in both 1000 (10:51.89) and 500 freestyle (5:19.84) events, winning the latter by 2.25, to go two-for-two in the distance races.
SACRED HEART OUTLOOK
The Pioneers have started the new season 2-0, which includes the school's first-ever win over NEC intrastate rival Central Connecticut. The Pioneers are led by junior Lauren Somers, already a two-time NEC Player of the Week, who holds the league's top time in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. The race between Somers and LIU's Vega could be a NEC Championship preview for February. The Blackbirds and Pioneers have faced off three times with LIU winning in 2015, before dropping the duel each of the last two seasons.
STONY BROOK OUTLOOK
Last year, the Blackbirds beat a first-year Stony Brook team up at Sacred Heart in the Seawolves second meet of the year, 190.5-49.5. SBU is led by senior Cassie Shear and sophomore Sara Chin to go along with seven newcomers for 2018-19.
UP NEXT
Next Saturday, November 3, the Blackbirds will travel to Loretto, Pa., to face NEC rival Saint Francis U. The meet is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
