Emily Garner begins her first year on the Long Island University women’s basketball staff as the director of basketball operations, after spending one season as an assistant coach with the Blackbirds. Garner came to LIU after a year as an assistant varsity coach at her alma mater, Robinson Secondary High School in Fairfax, Va. She also served as an assistant coach for the Potomac Valley Tarheels AAU team.
Garner played four seasons at Lafayette, where she co-captained the team that advanced to the Patriot League finals during her senior year. A member of the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, Garner finished her collegiate career among Lafayette’s leaders in several categories. Her 35 blocks are the sixth-highest total in school history and her 665 rebounds rank eighth. In addition, Garner ranks among the top 10 in single-season rebounds, blocks, free throws and free throws attempted.
During her time at Lafayette, she was active in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and helped plan and execute Youth Empowerment Day, an event that paired underprivileged youths with Leopard student-athletes. Garner was also involved with Lafayette’s Peer Mentor program.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Garner graduated from Lafayette in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in economics and business. She was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
