Mary McConnel begins her first season on the Long Island University women's basketball coaching staff in 2011-12. McConnell is no stranger to the Northeast Conference, having worked at Fairleigh Dickinson for three seasons prior to coming to the Downtown Brooklyn campus.

“Mary is going to bring great experience not only on the court but in the conference, having coached in the NEC for three years,” head coach Gail Striegler said. “She has a knowledge of the players in the conference as well as the teams themselves and that will be advantageous to our program.”

McConnell comes to Long Island after spending last season as an assistant at Fordham. With the Rams she handled guard development, recruiting, scheduling and scouting while also overseeing the team's NCAA compliance. Prior to her time in the Bronx, McConnell spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson.

While on the Knights' staff she developed and implemented practice plans, individual workouts and game strategies. McConnell also organized and facilitated staff recruiting travel schedules and on-campus recruiting visits, created scouting reports and oversaw the women's basketball budget. McConnell was also in charge of the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball summer camps.

Before coaching at Fairleigh Dickinson, McConnell spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at Providence after a season as an assistant coach at Rhode Island College.

A 2004 graduate of Bryant with a bachelor's degree in business management, she scored over 1,000 points and led her team to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. McConnell obtained a master's degree in educational counseling from Providence in 2007.
