Jamie Gillis enters her first season as an assistant coach at LIU Brooklyn after a successful playing career that included three professional years in Finland’s first division. Gillis, who will work primarily with the goalkeepers, is a four-year letterwinner and graduate of UMass Lowell, where she was an assistant coach in 2013-14.
One of the top players in UMass Lowell history, Gillis was named an All-American as a senior and was a two-time selection as Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Gillis played every minute of every match over her four years and virtually shattered every school record. During her tenure, the River Hawks posted a four-year record of 41-25-14 and moved on to the NCAA Division II Tournament three times.
In 79 appearances, Gillis set UMass Lowell records in shutouts in a season (14) and career (38); goals against average in a season (0.40) and career (0.81); and fewest goals in a season (nine, 2009) and a career (67).
Gillis enjoyed perhaps her best year as a senior, in which UMass Lowell went 12-5-4 – matching the school record for wins in a season – and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years.
More impressive, she set the NCAA Division II record for consecutive shutout minutes (1,333:20, encompassing 12 shutouts), a mark that currently stands.
In addition to earning All-American honors as a junior and senior, Gillis was a four-time NE-10 All-Conference standout, earning Third Team honors in 2006 and 2007; First Team in 2008 and 2009; and a four-time NSCAA All-East Region honoree (Second Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008; First Team in 2009).
Gillis was the co-recipient of the 2009-10 Lester H. Cushing Award for UMass Lowell’s Athlete of the Year, an honor she shared with NCAA shot put champion Jacqui Barrett.
Gillis was an equally accomplished student, graduating cum laude from the institution. She was also a two-time member of the Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic Team and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa academic fraternity.
After graduating with a degree in business management in 2010, Gillis joined GBK Kokkola in Finland’s second division. In her second season, she was named the Ykkonen Player of the Year.
In 2012, she backstopped GBK to the Ykkonen championship and earned a promotion to Finland’s premier division, the Naistenliga.
