Ronald Edmundson enters his second season as an assistant track & field coach, and helped the Blackbirds to a number of outstanding showings in the jump events during his first season at LIU Brooklyn. Edmundson’s jumpers earned six individual NEC titles, achieved two conference records, two school records, and jumped to four NCAA East Regional qualifying marks.
Edmundson helped sophomore Adam Walker-Khan to his first outdoor NEC title in the men’s triple jump, leaping a new personal best of 15.35 meters. Walker-Khan, who was named LIU Brooklyn's Most Outstanding Male Athlete in 2014-15, also captured both the indoor and outdoor NEC long jump titles and finished with a bronze medal at the outdoor IC4A Championships in the long jump with a seasonal best of 7.32m.
On the women's sice, junior Kyaira Wright-Harmon had the strongest year of her career as a Blackbird. In dominant fashion, Wright-Harmon swept the high jump, long jump, and triple jumps conferences titles at both the NEC Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
At outdoor championship, Wright-Harmon captured her second consecutive conference crown in her specialty, the high jump, by clearing 5’10", breaking her own conference record. She also jumped personal bests of 12.01m and 5.91m in taking her first outdoor titles in the triple and long jump, respectively.
Harmon-Wright was equally impressive indoors, as she broke the indoor NEC high jump record with a leap of 1.79m while also taking home titles in both long and triple jumps. In addition, she won her first high jump title at the prestigious Florida Relays with a leap of 1.78m, beating athletes from University of Florida, Alabama, Maryland and Louisville. She capped off her stellar season finishing 16
th in the high jump at NCAA Eastern Regional Championships, just missing the 12
th place needed to qualify for the Outdoor NCAA Women’s Outdoor Championship.
Edmundson also coached senior Amir Armstrong to his first NEC title in the triple jump with an indoor personal best of 14.96m. He later earned a silver medal behind his teammate at the outdoor conference championships and he finished seventh in the triple jump with a personal best of 15.24m en route to helping the Blackbirds to their first IC4A championship. The mark was not only a personal best, but also qualified Armstrong for NCAA East Regionals for the first time of his career.
Senior high jumper Kemar Lewis also had a stellar senior campaign under Edmundson, setting the program record in men’s indoor high jump at the 2015 NEC Indoor Championships with a leap 2.10m, just missing the NEC conference record by 2 centimeters. Lewis returned to form in the outdoor season to capture the NEC title in the high jump.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at LIU Brooklyn, Edmundson spent 14 years coaching at the prep level as the head coach at both Midwood High School and Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn. While coaching at the prep level, Edmundson mentored several state, city and borough champions and multiple All-Americans in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps.
Edmundson, who graduated from the University at Albany in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in history, excelled on the triple jump runway for the Great Danes. He won two conference championships in the triple jump, was a four-time regional selection for performances at the IC4A championships, while also being named to the USTFCCAA All-Academic team in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Following his career at Albany, Edmundson competed for the New York Elite Club team for one year, where he leapt to a personal best of 52’10" in the triple jump under coach Jayson Hill.
