Robert Cole finished his career as the Blackbirds all-time leading scorer with 1,800 points. He also set school records in field goals made (703), assists (610) and steals (274), and helped LIU to a 72-42 record during his time in Downtown Brooklyn. As a sophomore in 1980-81, Cole led the Blackbirds to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The following two seasons, LIU recorded 20 victories, and in 1981-82 earned a trip to the NIT. A three-time scoring and assist leader for LIU, Cole was ECAC Freshman of the Year in 1979-80 and was an All-Met and All-ECAC selection as a senior.
