Tommy Thompson came to Long Island University as an associate athletic director in 1980 and was also responsible for launching the softball program. 

As head coach of the Blackbirds from 1982-92, Thompson led LIU to nine winning seasons and posted a win percentage of .696 (245-107). He was at the helm of five conference championship squads, including the 1987 team that helped secure the all-sports Commissioner’s Cup. 

His 1991 squad posted the highest winning percentage (.853) in program history, while leading the nation in scoring at 8.21 runs per game. 

Thompson’s teams were also successful in the classroom, earning multiple academic all-district honors and NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. He accomplished all of this, while also serving as an associate athletic director at LIU for over 10 years.
