Brooklyn, N.Y. - Long Island University senior forward Ashley Palmer was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league on Monday. By virtue of her 23-point, eight-rebound performance in a road win over Tennessee Tech on Nov. 18, Palmer shares the honor with Sacred Heart's Callan Taylor.
Palmer came through in the clutch in the Blackbirds' victory over the Golden Eagles in the Preseason WNIT Consolation Round. The last two of her game-high 23 points broke a 58-58 tie with 48 seconds remaining in regulation and gave LIU the lead for good against the Ohio Valley Conference's preseason favorite. Last season, Tennessee Tech finished 23-8 and this year was ranked 16th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
The 5-foot-10 versatile forward currently leads LIU in scoring at 16.0 points per game and ranks second on the team at 7.3 rebounds per contest. The two-time All-NEC selection, who played 36 of 40 minutes at Tennessee Tech, went 8-for-17 from the field against the Golden Eagles and also shot 75 percent (6-of-8) from the charity stripe.
Long Island (2-1) returns home after a three-game road trip to begin the season with the Courtyard LaGuardia Turkey Classic on Nov. 25-26. The Blackbirds will play host to Charlotte and La Salle over the two-day event.
