Brooklyn, N.Y. - After setting a new career high with 31 points in a 69-61 win over Cal Poly, Long Island University women's basketball standout Ashley Palmer was selected as the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday. The award is the second of the season for Palmer, who also earned weekly accolades on Nov. 21.
Palmer became the first NEC player to break the 30-point barrier this season, going 10-for-21 from the field, 3-for-7 from three-point range and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line to improve LIU's record to 9-2 on the year. The Preseason All-NEC forward eclipsed her previous career scoring mark of 30, which she set in her first game in a Blackbirds uniform against La Salle on Nov. 16, 2008.
The 5-foot-10 Palmer also grabbed 10 rebounds against the Mustangs to register her third double-double this season. Helping Long Island win for the fourth time in a row, Palmer also had three steals in what was the Blackbirds' lone game last week.
Thus far this season, the Oxford, Pa. native tops all NEC players in scoring at 18.6 ppg, while also pulling down 7.9 rebounds per game to rank eighth in the conference.
