BROOKYLN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team will continue its quest for the first Northeast Conference win of the season Monday night, as the Blackbirds host local rival Wagner at the Wellness Center, Monday, January 14 at 7 p.m. Wagner, in the midst of a 12-game losing streak, will also be looking for their first NEC win of the year.
LIU is coming off a tough loss at Barclays Center Saturday. The Blackbirds, taking part in the first-ever women's college basketball game in the brand new arena, fell to Mount St. Mary's, 66-41. With the loss, LIU fell to 3-11 on the season, and 0-3 in NEC play. LIU has in the midst of a six-game losing streak, that they hope to snap Monday. The game will be the first played in the Wellness Center for the women since December 21.
Wagner is also 0-3 in the NEC, having lost to Fairleigh Dickinson (68-59), Monmouth (81-64) and St. Francis Brooklyn (72-66).
LIU is led in scoring by a trio of upperclassmen: seniors Tamika Guz and Krystal Wells and junior Cleandra Roberts are all averaging around eight points per game to lead scoring for LIU. Roberts also leads the team on defense, as she averages 5.4 rebounds per game. Junior Fanny Cavallo is second on the team in boards, averaging 4.8 rebounds per game, while Guz grabs 4.6 rebounds per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• This weekend's matchup will be the 76th between the Seahawks and the Blackbirds. Wagner leads the all-time series, 39-36 but LIU has won the last six straight.
• LIU swept the series last year, beating Wagner at home, 72-41, and on Staten Island, 67-60 in late January.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
• Wagner is one of three teams, along with LIU, searching for its first NEC win of the season. The Seahawks are 1-13 this season, and have not won a game since November 14, when Wagner beat Columbia, 61-47.
• This will be the first time new head coach Lisa Cermignano takes on LIU in the Wellness Center. Cermignano was hired this summer.
• Wagner has three top scoring threats. Forward Marie-Laurence Archambault leads the team with a 10.2 points per game average, while forward Stephanie Blais is next on the team with a 9.5 points per game average. Freshman guard Jordyn Peck is next on the list with an 8.9 points per game average.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
• Monday's matchup against Wagner is the first time the Blackbirds have played a game at home in the WRAC for nearly a month. After a win over Ohio University on December 21, LIU went on a five-game road swing. The Blackbirds were “home” is against Mount St. Mary's January 12th, but the game was played at the Barclays Center.

THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
• The Northeast Conference celebrates its 32nd anniversary this season. The 12-member conference dates back to 1981, when it originated as the men's basketball-only ECAC-Metro Conference.
• LIU Brooklyn is one of the six charter institutions that helped form the alliance in 1981, and all six schools remain affiliated with the NEC today.
• With the addition of five more colleges and universities over the years, including Bryant as a full member this season, the NEC has spread its footprint over five states and into such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
