BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's basketballl recruiting class of 2014 was recently ranked among the best in the nation, according to Dan Olsen's Girls Basketball Report. Head coach Gail Striegler's incoming class of Paris Jones, Stylz Sanders, Angel Waithe and Drew Winter was ranked 59th in the country by the recruiting service, ahead of recruiting classes from Northwestern University, Kansas State and Rutgers.
"We are excited for our program to be able to sign players of this caliber, who will come in and have an immediate impact on our program," Striegler said. "We are enthusiastic about the future of the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball program."
Winter, a 5-6 guard for Plainfield High School in New Jersey, comes to LIU ranked in Olsen's report as the No. 50 shooting guard in the nation, with an overall player ranking of No. 237. She is also ranked No. 137 in the nation by Premier Basketball Media. A National Adidas Champion in AAU with the New Jersey Sparks, Winter has scored over 1,000 points in her career. She averaged 17.9 points per game as a junior and was named first-team All-Union County in 2013.
Jones, a 5-5 guard, comes from Corona, Calif., and is the No. 67 ranked point guard in her class, with an overall ranking of No. 302. A four-year starter for a successful Santiago High School team, she has helped lead her team to three league championships. In 2013, the Sharks posted an impressive 29-3 record, and earned a California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section I-AA championship. She was named All-League in both 2012 and 2013, and has also played with Riverside Elite and West Coast Premier Valley AAU teams.
Sanders, a 5-9 guard from Arlington, Texas, is a four-year letterwinner for Mansfield Summit High School. She was a member of the Jaguar squad that won the 2012 4A State Championships, and in her junior season she helped lead the team to a Texas 4A regional semifinal appearance. She was selected first-team All-District that season, averaging 7.3 points per game and 3.7 steals per game.
Waithe, a 5-10 forward from Lehigh Acres, Fla., is a four-year letterwinner and three-time team captain for East Lee County High School. She led her team to a runner-up finish in the Lee County District and a national ranking, averaging 18.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
