TOWSON, Md. -
The LIU women's basketball team is on the road once again this week, for the second game in a month-long road swing. The Blackbirds will be looking for their first win of the year in Towson, Md., as they take on Towson, Monday, December 9 at 12 p.m. in SECU Arena.
The game is Towson's annual Science of Sport Day. The two teams will be joined by over 500 local elementary students, who will participate in math and science activities before the game.
The road trip includes games in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Arizona. In January, LIU will play road games at Wagner and Mount St. Mary's, before taking on St. Francis Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, January 11. The next time LIU plays at home in the Steinberg Center will be January 13, 2014, against Central Connecticut State.
LIU is 0-7 to start the season, after a tough loss to Penn in Philadelphia last week. The Blackbirds led at halftime for the first time this season, 33-27, but got in foul trouble in the second half. The Quakers went 30-for-38 from the free throw line, in what would prove to be the difference in the game. Penn took the win, 70-59 to improve to 2-2.
Three upperclassmen stepped up for the Blackbirds in the loss. Senior
Cleandra Roberts led LIU in scoring for the sixth game this season, with 18 points, along with seven rebounds. Senior
Fanny Cavallo had a career-high 12 points, along with five steals. She is the first LIU player to have five steals in a game since alum
Krystal Wells did last January versus Monmouth. And redshirt junior
Kelly Robinson had a season-high in both points and assists, with 10 point and seven assists. Junior
Letava Whippy led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
