BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team begins a long week of play Monday, as the Blackbirds will travel to four schools for four games in just eight days. The trip begins at Monmouth, Monday, February 18th, before the Blackbirds head to Central Connecticut State, Tuesday, February 20th. The Blackbirds will keep it local, taking on Wagner on Staten Island, Saturday, February 23, before heading south to Emittsburg, Md., to face off against Mount St. Mary's on the 25th.
LAST TIME OUT
LIU is coming off a tough loss to Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday, 64-63. In a game that went down to the final seconds, LIU was dealt a dagger with seven seconds left on the clock, when Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore Erika Livermore made a layup to tie the game, and drained the free throw to give her team the 64-63 win. Junior Cleandra Roberts led LIU with 20 points and 14 rebounds, along with four steals.
LEADING LIU
LIU has been led by its senior duo all season long. Tamika Guz and Krystal Wells have alternating leading the team in scoring. This week, they're tied, as they both average 10.0 points per game. Guz pulls down 4.8 rebounds per game. Junior Cleandra Roberts is the team's top rebounder, with an average of 6.8 boards per game, and is third in scoring, with 8.5 points per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• The Hawks own a 42-19 advantage in the all-time series with the Blackbirds, but have edged LIU, 14-10, in the last 24 meetings. The series had been tied, 10-10, in 20 meetings prior to last season, when Monmouth swept three games, including the NEC Tournament Quarterfinals, against the 20-win Blackbirds.
• The Hawks also captured a come-from-behind victory Jan. 19 in Brooklyn. Monmouth's Chevannah Paalvast had a layup with three seconds left in the game, and the shot was a final dagger for LIU, as the Hawks completed a stunning second-half comeback to take the game from the Blackbirds, 63-62. LIU led the game by as many as 15 points, but could not hold off a strong-shooting Monmouth squad.
• Seniors Krystal Wells and Tamika Guz led scoring for LIU in the loss, with 18 and 15 points respectively. Junior Cleandra Roberts had nine points and eight rebounds, while Fanny Cavallo had eight rebounds in the loss.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
• Monmouth is in the midst of a season-high three game winning streak. Most recently, the Hawks beat St. Francis Brooklyn, 51-47 Saturday at home.
• The Hawks are led by senior guard Alysha Womack, who averages 13.8 points per game, and shoots 74% from the free throw line. They're also led by junior forward Chevannah Paalvast, who averages 11.9 points per game, along with 5.0 rebounds per game. Abigail Martin leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game, while Sara English has 34 blocks on the season.
