BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team suffered a 66-45 loss to NEC frontrunner Quinnipiac Saturday in the Wellness Center. Junior Cleandra Roberts led the Blackbirds with 18 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while freshman Sophie Bhasin added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The game started on an even keel, with LIU taking an early 4-0 lead with a layup by Roberts. Quinnipiac would tie it up and take the lead with a three pointer at 15:49, but LIU kept it close for the duration of the half.
A jumper in the right corner by Bhasin at 6:57 cut the lead to 17-16. LIU would also tie the score up twice before the break, using a layup by Roberts at 3:`4 to make it 25-25, and a free throw by Guz made it 26-26 with 1:39 left in the half. Roberts tied it up once more with a layup at 0:44, but the Bobcats hit a three pointer, and would take the 31-29 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, senior Tamika Guz hit a layup to tie the score once more, 31-31 at 19:42. From there, however, the Bobcats went on a 22-2 run, widening the lead to 54-33 with 12:08 left to play.
Roberts got the Blackbirds back on the board with back-to-back layups, but Quinnipiac was able to hold LIU off for the remainder of the game, taking the matchup, 66-45.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 26-2 overall, and 17-0 in the NEC, while LIU falls to 6-22, 3-14 in the NEC. Roberts led LIU with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Bhasin added 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Up next for the Blackbirds is the final home game of the season. LIU will honor its seniors, Tamika Guz and Krystal Wells, Monday, March 4 at 7 p.m., when the Blackbirds host Sacred Heart in the Wellness Center.
