BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn head women's basketball coach Gail Striegler has announced that Shunta Nevitt has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Blackbirds in 2014-15.
"We are so excited to have Tay be a part of our LIU Brooklyn family," Striegler said. "She is a perfect fit for our uptempo style of play. Tay can play inside and out, which will cause matchup problems for many teams that we face during the year."
Nevitt played one season at Texas Tech before transferring to Blinn College in Texas in 2013-14. While with the Buccaneers, she played in all 35 games - including 30 starts - and emerged as the team's top defensive player and one of the top defenders in Region XIV. She accumulated 60 blocked shots to lead the team in the category and also added 30 steals.
A 6-0 forward, Nevitt was the team's second-leading rebounder at 7.2 per contest and also averaged 8.0 points as the Buccaneers went 28-7, finished with an impressive 15-3 record in region play and advanced to the National Junior College Tournament in Salina, Kan. A perimeter threat, Nevitt knocked down 38.5 percent of her three-point field goal attempts en route to a Region XIV All-Conference selection.
As a prep player, Nevitt played for head coach Stacey Stroman at Dekaney High School in Spring Texas, where she was a four-time all-district first team selection and was named the team's Defensive MVP in 2010-11. As a senior, Nevitt helped lead the Wildcats to a state finals appearance.
Nevitt joins early NLI signees Paris Jones, Stylz Sanders, Angel Waithe and Drew Winter as members of a recruiting class that was ranked 59th in the country in December 2013 by Dan Olsen's Girls Basketball Report, ahead of recruiting classes from Northwestern, Kansas State and Rutgers.
