Women's Basketball Takes Part in Cold Water Challenge

VIDEO: LIU Brooklyn Women's Basketball Cold Water Challenge

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -
The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team took part in the Cold Water Challenge, and is asking that student-athletes and coaches from the Northeast Conference and beyond do the same in the name of charity.

Head coach Gail Striegler, senior Letava Whippy and junior Sophie Bhasin each completed the bone-chilling task. As the challenge goes, each coach and player that does the challenge then urges coaches and student-athletes from other schools to follow suit. For each coach that accepts the challenge, Striegler will donate $50 to the Kay Yow Foundation. If a coach does not respond, that coach is responsible to donate $100 to the Foundation.

Student-athletes that do not respond to the challenge will owe six hours of community service, while Whippy and Bhasin will be responsible for two hours each of community service for each student-athlete that does respond.

Striegler named Mount St. Mary's head coach Bryan Whitten, Ralph Ventre of the Northeast Conference and Hofstra head coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey as people she would like to see take the plunge, while Whippy and Bhasin have asked a trio of St. Francis Brooklyn student-athletes - Leah Fechko, Eilidh Simpson and Sarah Benedetti - as well as Sacred Heart's Gabrielle Washington to join the fun.
