Adriana Viñas Joy inked her name in the record books Sunday afternoon in LIU's 3-0 shutout win of Saint Francis U., as the senior broke the program record for digs in a career. Coming into the match, Viñas Joy needed only 12 digs to surpass the previous mark, and she went well above, with 25 digs in three sets. She now has 1,889 career digs, breaking Svetlana Simic's record of 1,876, set from 2006-09.
The Blackbirds beat the Red Flash, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14), to improve to 10-12 overall, 9-2 in the NEC.
The game was close from the early going; host Saint Francis took a 5-4 lead, and the two teams were locked in a battle from there. LIU eventually used a 5-1 run to take the lead, 12-8, on a kill from senior Tamara Ingjic. Another 3-0 run helped the Blackbirds go up, 17-13, forcing SFU to take a timeout. At the end of the set, the Blackbirds scored four straight points, capped by a service ace from Viñas Joy, to earn set point, 24-17. SFU was able to score one more point, before Ignjic ended the set with a kill, 25-18.
Set two followed the same pattern from the start, with the two teams staying close. LIU eventually used a kill from junior
Mengdi Zhao to go up, 10-7, and would hold on to the lead from there. But the Red Flash were never far behind, and against scored points facing match point, before the Blackbirds took the second set on a kill from freshman
Viktoria Fink, 25-21.
Even with LIU's 2-0 match advantage, the Red Flash came out fighting in the third set. The home team took a 9-7 lead on LIU, before the Blackbirds began a crucial rally. LIU went on a 11-2 rally, taking a 21-12 lead on SFU. It wasn't long before LIU was able to end the match on back-to-back SFU errors, taking set three, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

Tamara Ignjic led the offense with 17 kills, while freshman
Dolores Kopren had 40 assists and 12 digs. Viñas Joy led the defense with 25 digs, while senior
Cydni Asuncion added 13 digs and two service aces.
