STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball fell to 2-7 on the season Monday night in Island FCU Arena, as the Blackbirds were beaten by Stony Brook, 71-54. A low-scoring second quarter proved to be the difference in the game for LIU.
The Blackbirds opened the game on a strong note, scoring first with a layup by senior
Jolanna Ford at 9:30, and a minute later, senior
Shanice Vaughan added a layup to put LIU up, 4-0 at 8:33. The Blackbirds shot well in the early going, and a three-pointer by junior
Shanovia Dove would put LIU up, 7-2. From there, LIU continued to lead, eventually using another three-pointer from Dove and a layup by Ford to take a 14-8 lead with 3:29 left in the first quarter. But once the Seawolves found their shot, Stony Brook was hard to stop. The home team ended the period on an 8-2 run, that saw them take a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Stony Brook extended the lead into the second quarter, starting the period on a 7-0 run to widen the lead up to 29-16. Dove would make a layup and a three pointer to help the Blackbirds start to close the gap, but the Seawolves ended the first half scoring five more unanswered points, taking the 39-21 lead into halftime.
The home team's lead widened in the start of the third quarter, when the Seawolves outscore LIU 16-4 over six minutes of play, taking their widest lead of the game, 55-27. The Blackbirds came rallying back though, putting together a surge of scoring to help close the gap. In the final three minutes of the third quarter, LIU went on a run, scoring eleven unanswered points to close the lead to 55-39 with 51 seconds left in the period. Dove had two straight steals that she converted to fast break layups, while sophomore
Stylz Sanders sparked the run by making four straight free throws, and would close the run with a put-back layup.
The game continued to be a back-and-forth pattern of runs. Stony Brook would go on a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter, eventually going up, 66-41 with 6:38 to play. LIU would answer with a 9-0 run of its own that closed the distance to 66-50 with just over a minute to play. In the final minute of play, the two teams went shot-for-shot, and in the end, Stony Brook took the win, 71-54.

Stylz Sanders had a career-high 10 points and six rebounds. Senior
