LORETTO, Pa. – The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team saw an early lead evaporate Saturday afternoon in DeGol Arena, as Saint Francis University rallied to beat the Blackbirds, 87-75.
The Red Flash got the first points on the board early on, but LIU, sparked by a jumper from senior
Letava Whippy, went on a 7-0 run, to take the lead, 7-2. The Blackbirds would hold on to the lead from there, keeping the home team at arm's length until freshman
DeAngelique Waithe sparked had a jumper that would start another LIU run. The Blackbirds outscored SFU, 8-0, over the next minute of play, giving LIU a 12-point lead, 31-19 at 6:31.
But just under a minute and a half later, SFU senior Alexa Hayward went to work. She scored seven straight points on her own, cutting LIU's lead to 34-31 at the four-minute mark. A jumper from junior
Sophie Bhasin widened LIU's lead back up to 38-32 at 3:25, but the home team kept the pressure on. In the final three minutes of the first half, Saint Francis went on an 8-1 run to take the lead in the game, 40-39 at 1:45. Waithe made a layup to take the lead back for LIU, 41-40, but it was the last basket LIU would score in the half. Saint Francis took the 44-41 lead into the break.
The Red Flash continued the run in the second half, opening the second stanza on an 8-1 run that would widen the lead to 52-42 at 16:50. Back-to-back baskets from junior
Jahmia Phillips and Bhasin helped close the lead to just six points, 56-50 at 12:17. But Saint Francis answered with a 10-2 run, including eight points from freshman Maya Wynn. Wynn drained a three with just under ten minutes to play, as Saint Francis took its widest lead of the game, 66-52.
LIU answered SFU's run by outscoring the home team 8-3 over the next two minutes, including four points from Bhasin. The effort closed the game to 66-58 at the eight minute mark, but it was the closest LIU would come for the rest of the game.The Red Flash held LIU at arm's length for the remaining minutes, matching basket for basket, taking the win in the end, 87-75.
