BROOKLYN, N..Y - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team fell to MAAC foe Siena, 20-8, on Saturday afternoon at LIU Field.
The Blackbirds kept with the Saints most of the first half, but Siena was able to pull away in the second, outscoring LIU 10-3. Siena held the advantage on draw controls, 20-10, but the Blackbirds picked up 17 ground balls to the Saints' 13.
Siena got the first look, scoring a little less than five minutes into the first half. The Saints pushed the score up to as much as 4-0, before freshman Sierra O'Connor put LIU on the board on an assist from Dale Cosgrave. The Saints answered with a quick draw control and subsequent goal just 30 seconds later.
LIU's leading scorer, sophomore Jenn Peters, broke a break in the scoring with 12:18 to play in the first, as Cosgrave had her second assist of the afternoon. Siena score twice in the next seven minutes to go up by as much as five.
O'Connor scored her second goal of the day less than two minutes later, but the Saints once again scored a pair for a six-goal advantage. The two teams traded goals before Cosgrave ended the half with one more for LIU.
The Blackbirds looked to take control of the second half early, as sophomore Tori Shinkowitz found Cosgrave just 30 seconds in, but two won draw controls from the Saints led to two more goals on their end. O'Connor added her final goal of the game at the 26:48 mark.
Most of the second half belonged to the Saints, who scored seven straight in the next 20 minutes before Peters posted a successful free position goal.
Peters and O'Connor each had three goals on the day, while Cosgrave posted the remaining two. Goalkeeper Alexis Maldonado made 15 saves, while Darrien Diez had five. Shinkowitz won three draw controls, while freshman Carly Weiss picked up three ground balls.
