EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mount St. Mary's defeated the LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon, 18-6, in Emmitsburg, Md.
The Blackbirds managed 18 shots and 15 on goal, but could not convert in their final regular-season road match. LIU led in ground balls, 11-10, while also adding 10 caused turnovers and 12 draw controls.
A free-position goal from Mount St. Mary's started the scoring off three minutes in. The Mount added another two minutes later, but two goals from sophomores Mary McQueen and Jenn Peters tied the game at two with 20 minutes to go in the first.
Mount St. Mary's would then go on an 8-0 run, with LIU only managing one shot, before Sierra O'Connor would add LIU's third goal of the game on an assist from Mary McQueen with 10:45 to play in the half. The Mountaineers scored one more with 34 seconds to go. Peters would shoot twice more, but Mount goalkeeper Steph Rurkowskiu was able to make both saves.
Peters caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and scored to start the second half for the Blackbirds. Sophomore Tori Shinkowitz then added a free position goal a minutes later to cut the Mount's lead to four. But a foul on the Blackbirds gave Mount St. Mary's their own free-position goal to go back up by five.
An unsuccessful shot by senior Brittany Rader led to a successful clear attempt from the Mount, who attempted one of their own, but Blackbirds goalkeeper Alexis Maldonado was there to make the save. Two fouls from LIU put the Mount on the hash, as they scored again to send the score to 11-5. A quickly won draw control led to another Mountaineers' goal with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
The Blackbirds took a timeout, but Mount St. Mary's was able to score two more, causing LIU to call another. Freshman Carlie Robinson added LIU's sixth goal of the game after Shinkowitz won the draw control.
Two LIU turnovers gave way to two more Mount goals for a score of 16-6 with just under 11 to go. Mount St. Mary's would add two more to end the game at 18-6.
LIU Brooklyn returns home for on Friday, April 24 to host Saint Francis U. at 4:00 p.m.
