NEWARK, N.J. - Freshman
Marian Awad and redshirt sophomore
Allegra Ondrejka each recorded goals while redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Erin Harbison picked up her first career win in net as the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team snapped a five-match losing skid with a 2-1 victory over NJIT on Tuesday evening. Senior
Lucy Gunton-Jones also picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season for the Blackbirds, who improved to 3-7-0 on the year.
LIU had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 20th minute, when a header off a corner from junior
Chloe Amaradio clanged off the crossbar. Five minutes later, junior
Madison Gomez missed on consecutive opportunities as the match moved through the majority of the first half scoreless. In the 41st minute, however, Awad finally gave the Blackbirds the lead when she converted a pass from Gunton-Jones in the box for her third goal of the season.
Following intermission, the Highlanders had three of the first four shots of the second half but all three were stopped by Harbison. Amaradio again missed on a chance in the 67th minute, but Ondrejka converted on her first and only opportunity of the match from 25 yards out just 40 seconds later to push LIU Brooklyn in front, 2-0.
NJIT picked up the pressure in the ensuing 25 minutes, and halved its deficit in the 81st minute on a goal from Nicole Baldassini. The Highlanders had one last chance with just over two minutes remaining, but Neema Liverpool's attempt was thwarted by Harbison to ensure victory for the Blackbirds.
Harbison closed with seven saves in goal for LIU, while Amaradio led the squad with three shots. Karen David had one save for NJIT, who fell to 2-7-0 on the season.
