BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Five different members of the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team (2-2) found the back of the net as the Blackbirds compiled an impressive 31 shots in a 5-2 victory over Saint Peter's (0-4) in its home opener on Friday evening at LIU Field. Senior Erin Fish scored the game-winning goal early in the second half as LIU overcame a brief one-goal deficit with four straight scores over the final 48 minutes of the match.

The Blackbirds controlled the pace of play for the majority of the first 30 minutes, and earned an early 1-0 advantage when junior transfer Ashley Drozd collected a loose ball in the box and scored. Drozd played her first two collegiate seasons with the Peacocks and registered her first career goal with the Blackbirds after scoring five times with SPU.

LIU Brooklyn continued to put pressure on, firing seven of the next eight shots including three on goal. Saint Peter's goalkeeper Taylor McLean was up to the challenge on all three, including a nice stop of a partial breakaway chance by junior Madison Gomez in the 32nd minute.

SPU would counter less than a minute later when Barbara Paiva headed home a looping ball sent in by Kelsey Nugent to tie the match at 1-1. The Peacocks would work quickly and move ahead less than three minutes later as Paiva once again found the back of the net in the 35th minute.

With time running down in the first half, Gomez got the Blackbirds back to even as she rifled a shot from 17 yards out to put the score at 2-2 prior to intermission.

Paiva had an opportunity to once again put Saint Peter's on top early in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Jessica Montrose made the save. Minutes later, Fish converted just inside the near post off a nice through ball by Gomez to give the Blackbirds a 3-2 lead.

From there, LIU Brooklyn once again took control and pepper the net with multiple shots over the next 10 minutes. A header off a corner from junior Chloe Amaradio appeared destined for the back of the net but a Peacock defender was there to clear it off the line just in time.

The 70th minute saw a rocket of a shot by Nugent nearly tie the game, but the ball hit the crossbar and was cleared by LIU's defense. In the 77th minute, the Blackbirds finally got the insurance goal they were looking for when freshman Marian Awad took a short pass from Gomez and finished to the right side to put the score at 4-2. The final score of the match came when redshirt sophomore Allegra Ondrejka tallied her second goal of the season off a back-heel flick from Gomez, who recorded her third assist of the game on the play.

Gomez's assist total matched LIU Brooklyn's single-game record for assists last set by teammate Lucy Gunton-Jones, who turned the trick last season against Sacred Heart. Gomez also led the charge in shots with seven, including five on goal, while Awad had six and fellow freshman Summer Sofer attempted five. Montrose finished with five saves to pick up her second victory of the year.

LIU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 in the nation's capital against American University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
