BROOKLYN, N.Y. - St. Francis Brooklyn forward Amdy Fall had 11 points, 13 rebounds and added four blocked shots to spearhead a defense that held the LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team to 21.7 percent shooting as the Terriers took home the Battle of Brooklyn trophy with a 64-49 win on Saturday afternoon at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Jerome Frink had a game-high 16 points for LIU, who fell to 9-10 on the year and 3-5 in Northeast Conference play.
The Blackbirds led for much of the first half, using a 6-0 run that included four from Frink to go on top 16-13 with 9:25 remaining in the period. A three-pointer from junior
Joel Hernandez, who closed with 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double, nudged LIU in front 19-15 before a brief spurt by the Terriers knotted the contest at 20-20 with 4:50 on the clock.
A 7-0 run that included five more points from Frink boosted the margin to 27-20, and a free throw from the Jersey City, N.J. product closed the scoring in the opening half as the Blackbirds entered the locker room in front, 30-25. LIU Brooklyn did not shoot the ball well in the opening period but did turn St. Francis Brooklyn over 12 times and gathered eight offensive boards.
Two free throws from
Nura Zanna and a three-point play from Hernandez boosted LIU Brooklyn's lead to its largest of the game at 35-25 with 18:24 remaining. But the Blackbirds would run into problems offensively over the next six minutes, missing its next 10 shots as the Terriers scored 11 straight to take a one-point lead at 36-35.
A three-pointer from Frink ended the drought and briefly gave the Blackbirds a 38-36 advantage before a three-pointer from SFBK's Yunus Hopkinson on the next possession pushed the Terriers back on top. Following a fast-break hoop from Tyreek Jewell, another three-pointer from junior

St. Francis Brooklyn re-took the lead on a three-point play from Fall at the 6:38 mark, and the two teams traded scores over the next two minutes before a decisive 10-0 run by the Terriers pushed the margin to 58-47 with 1:34 on the clock. The Blackbirds connected on just one of their final 11 attempts from the floor and finished the second half shooting 16.2 percent from the field.
In addition to Fall's performance, Chris Hooper came off the bench to score 15 points and grabbed four rebounds to earn Lai-Lynch Battle of Brooklyn MVP honors. Sophomore
Martin Hermannsson was the third LIU player to score in double figures with 11 points, and added seven rebounds and four assists.
LIU Brooklyn continues NEC play on Wednesday, Jan. 27 against Sacred Heart at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with the game scheduled to be broadcast on MSG Network.
