SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Sophomore
Rasmus Hansen converted a penalty kick with just 18 remaining in regulation to help the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Bryant on Friday afternoon. The Blackbirds outshot the Bulldogs, 13-10, and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks but settled for a tie to move to 6-3-2 on the year and 0-0-1 in NEC play.
Freshman
Giuseppe Barone had a prime chance for LIU in the opening minutes of play, as his shot in the fifth minute hit the post but deflected away from net. Hansen had a pair of shots in the first half, with one being saved by Bryant goalkeeper Olivier Larente and the other going wide.
The contest was also marred by a myriad of fouls throughout the contest. Bryant was whistled for an astounding 36 fouls and was given four yellow cards, while the Blackbirds had just 14 fouls and a single yellow.
With the match still scoreless heading to the second half, Thomas Binder broke the deadlock with a header goal in the 54th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Despite the score, LIU continued to pressure and create good chances. Sophomore
Romario Guscott had two shots on goal that were saved by Larente in the 75th and 77th minutes and Hansen had a few more opportunities that he was unable to convert.
As time continued to tick away, it appeared that Bryant would come away with a home victory to start of NEC play. But a foul was called on Bryant in the box and a penalty kick was awarded in the 90th minute of action. Hansen calmly stepped to the spot and converted to knot the contest and force extra time.
In overtime, redshirt senior goalkeeper
Logan Keys came up huge with two stops in the first period to keep the contest tied. In the second extra session, Hansen had one final chance for a golden goal but his shot in the 110th minute was once again stopped.
Hansen closed with a team-best six shots while Keys and Larante both had four saves in goal.
