BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sophomore
Martin Hermannsson put together another spectacular all-around performance in helping the LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team to its second straight win, a wire-to-wire, 82-67 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday afternoon. Juniors
Jerome Frink and
Joel Hernandez also played vital roles for the Blackbirds, who with the win improved to 13-12 on the year and 7-7 in Northeast Conference play.
Hermannsson filled the stat sheet to the tune of 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals without turning the ball over in 36 minutes of action. The game was the second of the 2015-16 season in which the Icelandic guard fulfilled the statistical output in each of the five categories, the only two such games in NCAA Division I men's basketball this year and just the sixth and seventh since 2010-11. Frink registered his 20th consecutive game scoring in double figures with 15 points while Hernandez also closed with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
The Blackbirds jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, then pushed the cushion to 13-4 after a three-ball from Frink and a layup from junior
Glenn Feidanga. The Terriers scored five straight to get to within 13-9, but LIU responded with an 11-4 spurt to extend the advantage to 24-13. The Blackbirds used solid defense and an efficient offense to bump the margin all the way to 39-24 following five straight points from junior
Iverson Fleming, before a three-pointer from SFBK's Jon Doss closed the half and put the score at 39-27.
LIU continued to lead by a comfortable margin through the early portion of the second half, before another three from Doss cut the lead to 52-44 with 12:18 remaining. The Blackbirds remained in front by eight a minute later before two free throws from Frink began a run of six straight to re-up the lead to 60-46 with 9:50 left.
A three-pointer from Frink and an emphatic dunk from redshirt sophomore
Nura Zanna essentially put the game out of reach for the Terriers, propelling LIU to its largest lead of the game at 78-61 with 3:22 on the clock. LIU's defense was the key down the stretch, as it limited St. Francis Brooklyn to two field goals over the final 7:54 of the contest.
Junior
Aakim Saintil was the fourth player to reach double figures for the Blackbirds with 11 points and also handed out a game-high eight assists. LIU Brooklyn dished out 19 assists and turned the ball over just seven times. Four players also reached double digits in points for the Terriers, led by Chris Hooper who had 15.
LIU Brooklyn returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 18 at Robert Morris. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
