BOCA RATON, Fla. - The LIU Brooklyn softball team received a quality complete-game performance from sophomore
Erynn Sobieski in the circle and came through with four runs over the final two innings to break a 1-1 deadlock and earn a 5-1 win over UMass on Saturday afternoon. Sobieski allowed just five hits and an earned run over seven innings to pick up her fourth win of the year.
Both the LIU and UMass offenses could not break through against the quality pitching of Sobieski and Minutewomen starter Meg Colleran, who entered the game with a 2.24 ERA. The Blackbirds has a prime chance to score in the top of the first, as senior
Whitney West led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch.
An error and a walk to sophomore
Victoria Zamora loaded the bases with nobody out, but three straight groundouts closed the inning and failed to produce a run. From there, just two base runners were allowed over the next seven half-innings. In the top of the fifth, LIU Brooklyn put a pair on when junior
Kayla Gloady walked and classmate
Karlie Brady legged out an infield single. Colleran, however, was up to the challenge again and held the Blackbirds scoreless.
The deadlock was finally broken in the bottom of the fifth, as Whitney Cooper singled home Shea Newsome to give UMass a 1-0 lead. The Minutewomen looked poised to add to their lead with runners on first and second with just one out, but Sobieski induced a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
LIU Brooklyn bounced right back to tie the game the following frame, taking advantage of a UMass miscue. Zamora led off with an infield single, then an error allowed
Kylie Mulholland to reach with Zamora moving all the way to third base. Two batters later, senior
Ariana Lopez lofted a fly ball into center field that was deep enough to score Zamora and tie the game.
Sobieski worked around a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for the Blackbirds offense to take charge. Gloady opened the inning with a single through the right side, and Brady beat out a bunt to put a pair on with nobody out for West. LIU Brooklyn's new all-time career hits leader came through in the clutch for the second straight game, doubling home Gloady to put the score at 2-1.
An RBI groundout by freshman
Patricia Griffin and run-scoring base hits from Zamora and Lopez bumped the LIU advantage to 5-1. The four-run cushion was more than enough for Sobieski, who retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the win.
LIU closes out the Florida Atlantic Parents Weekend Tournament with a pair of games on Sunday, March 13, beginning with a matchup against No. 19 Minnesota at 1:30 p.m. The Blackbirds will also play the host Owls in a contest scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m.
