BOCA RATON, Fla. - Freshman
Tallie Woodson put together her second consecutive quality start, tossing a complete-game three-hitter while lifting the LIU Brooklyn softball team to a 2-1 win over Florida Atlantic (21-5) on Sunday. Sophomore
Victoria Zamora registered an RBI double and scored a run while seniors
Whitney West and Ashley Sandoval-Colon also had hits for the Blackbirds.
After allowing an infield single to the second batter of the game, Woodson was a force over the next three innings, setting down 12 straight FAU batters before another infield single with one out in the fifth. The lefthander once again befuddled the Owls, inducing a comebacker that started a 1-6-3 double play to end the frame.
An inning prior, the Blackbirds were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead as Sandoval-Colon began the frame with a bunt base hit. Zamora followed with a run-scoring double that plated her teammate and pushed LIU in front, 1-0. A fielder's choice from junior
Kylie Mulholland pushed Zamora, who advanced to third on the throw home the play prior, across to score the second run of the inning.
LIU Brooklyn looked to add to its lead with two on and nobody out, but FAU pitcher Amanda Wilson stranded a pair and kept the margin at 2-0.
In the sixth, Florida Atlantic advanced its first runner into scoring position as Delaney Rickey was hit by a pitch with two down. A wild pitch pushed Rickey to second, with Woodson taking care of the next batter with a comebacker that she tossed to first to close the frame.
The Owls, who held LIU scoreless in the top half of the seventh, came back in the bottom as Carnesha Thompson opened the inning with a base hit. A walk put a pair on with nobody out, before consecutive groundouts produced FAU's first run of the game and halved the Blackbirds lead to 2-1. With the potential tying run just 60 feet away, Woodson forced Mickey Bell to pop up the first pitch of her at-bat to the right side. Senior first baseman
Celinna Cosio made the play and ended the game, securing Woodson's second straight complete-game win.
Facing nationally-ranked Minnesota in the first game of the day, senior
Whitney West began the contest with a double to right field off reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and Second Team All-American Sara Groenewegen. West was left stranded, however, as Groenewegen caught a pop up herself and recorded two strikeouts to work around the hit.
Equally impressive through the first three innings was sophomore
Erynn Sobieski, who retired nine straight over the three frames before running into trouble in the fourth. A leadoff double from Sam Macken began the rally that eventually producesd five runs and staked the Golden Gophers to a 5-0 lead. Minnesota scored three more times in the fifth to boost its lead to 8-0, and kept the Blackbirds off the board in the bottom half to close out the run-rule shortened contest.
