BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team picked up its first conference win after defeating Central Connecticut, 6-5, in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Jenn Peters scored the sudden-death overtime goal with 1:23 left on the clock, to send the Blackbirds to victory over the Blue Devils.
Tori Shinkowitz led the offensive efforts for the LIU team, registering a hat trick in the contest. The junior tallied the sole LIU goal in the first half, and would score twice in the second, including the game-tying goal to send the two squads into overtime.
Shinkowitz produced from start to finish on Sunday, getting the Blackbirds on the board first after finding the back of the net just 12 seconds into the contest.
Central Connecticut would respond with two goals in the next 12 minutes. But that would be the only scoring to occur in the first half, as the Blue Devils went into halftime up 2-1.
The Blackbirds took a 3-0 run to get things going in the second half, as Shinkowitz, Peters, and Robinson would all score in under four minutes, giving LIU the 4-2 advantage. But Central Connecticut would post the same 3-0 run, to go up 5-4 wtih 5:13 remaining.
With 3:04 remaining in regulation, Shinkowtiz was able to even the score with a goal and send the game into extra minutes.
Rorie Crum would earn the draw control to begin the overtime period. 19 seconds after a LIU-timeout, Peters would score on CCSU's relief keeper, Diana Lenares, to send the Blackbirds to victory in sudden-death.
LIU showed a strong overall effort over CCSU on Sunday, tallying more shots, ground balls and draw controls.
Alexis Maldonado spent the entire 63:37 in the cage for LIU, saving six shots from the Blue Devils' offense. Both Maldonado and
Shannon Morris were honored during a Senior Day celebration at halftime.
