WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman
Marius Koss scored the first goal of his collegiate career to help the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team come back from an early deficit to draw with Howard, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds outshot the Bison, 11-7, and nearly scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime but settled for a tie to move to 2-2-1 on the year.
Sophomore
Rasmus Hansen registered the first shot of the game in the eighth minute that went wide, before Howard took control and eventually grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute with a goal from Joel Pagan. LIU Brooklyn had the final pair of chances in the opening half, as junior
Naeem Charles and senior
Ryan Herold each had chances that were stopped by Howard's Kenneth Hershey.
The Blackbirds were the better side in the second half, led by Hansen who had four shots in the period. His third opportunity in the 80th minute led to a corner kick from Charles. After a clearance, Hansen took another corner and found Koss in the top of the box. The freshman blasted a shot home to knot the score at 1-1.
Howard had three opportunities in a thrilling final two minutes but had two of the shots blocked by LIU's defense. Hansen had a go in the final seconds of regulation to end the contest, but Hershey was able to stop the shot and force overtime.
After a fairly uneventful first overtime period, LIU Brooklyn had the two best chances to earn a win in the second. Hansen hit the post in the 107th minute and freshman
Giuseppe Barone was stopped by Hershey in the 110th minute. Hershey closed with six saves, while his counterpart for the Blackbirds, sophomore
Michael Ramsey, had two saves in his first start of the season.
LIU Brooklyn will open its home schedule on Friday, Sept. 16 against defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Rider at LIU Field. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
