TOWSON, Md. - Freshman
Madi Cook scored the first goal of her collegiate career as the LIU Brooklyn field hockey team was tied with Towson, 1-1, toward the end of the first half. The Tigers, however, scored a goal just seconds before halftime to take the lead and added one more in the second half to defeat the Blackbirds, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Lexi Butler scored Towson's first goal on a penalty stroke at the 12:36 mark, before the Blackbirds began to assert themselves over the next five minutes. Freshman
Brianne Lynch recorded a shot that led to a sequence of five shots and three penalty corners over the ensuing 1:52. The final shot of the rally was taken by Cook, who scored to tie the match at 1-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
Molly Jannell was tested after the equalizer and was up to the challenge, stopping a pair of shots in the 22nd minute. Defender
Haley Ballard also came up big with a defensive save in the 26th minute. With the clock ticking away towards halftime, Towson had a pair of penalty corners over the final four minutes with the final one leading to the go-ahead score by Butler.
Cook had a chance just early on in the second half to tie the score but her shot was denied by Towson's Emilee Woodall. Less than a minute later, Butler set up the third goal of the contest for Towson to put the score at 3-1. From there, Woodall stopped all three shots she faced to secure the win for the Tigers.
LIU Brooklyn returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 22 with a matchup with Missouri State. The game is the first of a stretch that will see the Blackbirds play three contests over a four-day span in Missouri.
