BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomores
Romario Guscott,
Simen Hestnes and
Rasmus Hansen each found the back of the net as the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team built a three-goal lead and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Bucknell in the first match of the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont, on Friday. The win improves the Blackbirds to 2-1-0 on the season and drops the Bison to 0-2-1.
LIU jumped out to an early lead less than six minutes into the contest, as Guscott fired a shot from distance off a failed clear by a Bucknell defender to give the Blackbirds a 1-0 lead. In the 14th minute, LIU Brooklyn doubled its lead as Hestnes scored off a corner kick to put the score at 2-0. The Blackbirds entered halftime with an 8-5 shot advantage.
Just 3:43 into the second half, LIU upped its advantage to 3-0 when Hansen scored his second goal of the season on a tremendous individual effort. Bucknell cut its deficit to 3-1 in the 55th minute as Justin Gallani headed home a corner kick. But that is as close as it would get, as redshirt senior goalkeeper
Logan Keys made a pair of saves over the final 35 minutes to earn his second win of the season.
LIU Brooklyn will take on host Vermont, who defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, for the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic title on Sunday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
