DAVIDSON, N.C. - The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon in North Carolina. Freshman Casey Carrigan registered her first career goal off an assist from classmate Lydia Trout as the Blackbirds fell to 0-2 on the year.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the contest before the Blackbirds were able to pick up their defense and hold them to one goal over the final 28 minutes of the first half and entered the locker room trailing 3-0.

Appalachian State started the second half off strong with consecutive goals within 28 seconds of one another to bump the cushion to 5-0. Three more goals put the score at 8-0 before Carrigan broke the drought in the 60th minute to give LIU its second goal in as many games.

Freshman Shelly Drucker recorded four saves while classmate Molly Jannell saw the first action of her career for the Blackbirds and had three saves. Rachel Gaines allowed just one goal and had three saves for App State.

LIU Brooklyn continues its season on Friday, Sept. 9 against Penn. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
