Upperclassmen Lead Women's Basketball In Loss At Yale

NEW HAVEN, CONN. --- Graduate student Denisha Petty-Evans and senior DeAngelique Waithe each scored in double figures as the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team opened its 2017-18 campaign with a 62-51 road defeat against Yale Friday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.

Petty-Evans scored a team-high 13 points on 50 percent shooting (6-of-12) in her first game in black & silver since transferring from Siena College. Waithe chipped in 11 points in her first game with ten or more points since February 27, 2016 (13 points vs. Bryant) and added a team-best nine rebounds. Freshman Jeydah Johnson had nine points and five rebounds in her collegiate debut, leading all players with a trio of three-pointers. Redshirt junior Drew Winter was all over the stat sheet - recording seven points, game highs of nine rebounds (career high) and five assists and four steals (tied career high).

Yale scored the first basket of the game on a three-pointer but LIU answered with an 8-0 run keyed by two of Johnson's three shots from long distance. The Bulldogs countered the Blackbirds with a 10-0 surge of their own to regain the lead (13-8) and ended the first quarter by putting LIU in a six-point deficit (19-13).

LIU won the second quarter, 18-17, and made its best rally attempt midway through the period. After falling behind by 12 points (25-13) at the 7:34 mark, the Blackbirds went on a nearly four minute, 13-4 run capped by a successful Waithe and-one to trim Yale's lead to three (29-26). Yale could only add two more points to its lead by halftime as LIU remained in striking distance
going into the second half, 36-31.

In the second half, LIU's deficit doubled (47-37) by the latter half of the third quarter and swelled to a 14 points in the first minute of the fourth (51-37). The Blackbirds continued to fight on, closing the margin to five points twice. Petty-Evans scored seven straight points in a 9-0 run to make the score 51-46 and Johnson's last three-pointer matched one from Yale keep the Blackbirds five points away (54-49) with a little over three minutes left. In the end, the Bulldogs outscored LIU 8-2 down the stretch to seal the game.
