The first set saw both teams trade leads and play through ties for the first ten points. After a Nina Petranovic kill knotted the score at 5-5, Sacred Heart managed to convert on four straight attacks to go ahead, 9-5. The Blackbirds stayed focused and eventually drew even again (13-13) on an attack error on the Pioneers. SHU would take three of the next four points to go ahead, 16-14, and held off the Blackbirds' rally the rest of the way. Sacred Heart opened the second by scoring four of the first five points of the set but LIU remained close and made the score 4-4 on an SHU attack error. Both teams once again tied at 5-5 before the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to double up the Blackbirds (10-5). Eight of the next ten points would go in favor of LIU, giving the Blackbirds their first lead of the set at 13-12. The Blackbirds would extend their lead to four (18-14) before forcing the Pioneers to use their final timeout of the set. Sacred Heart scored on the next rally (18-15) but couldn't cut LIU's lead to less than three as the hosts squared the match at 1-1. LIU took an early 3-2 lead in the third but saw the Pioneers score five in a row to put the home team in a 7-3 hole. The Blackbirds pulled to within three on eight different occasions before cutting SHU's lead to two (16-14). The Pioneers answered back by outscoring the Blackbirds 9-7 to close the set. Both teams swapped runs to begin the fourth, with a 3-0 Sacred Heart run being topped by a 6-0 surge from LIU. The Blackbirds doubled up the Pioneers over the next six rallies (4-2) to take a 10-5 lead and force an SHU timeout. LIU continued to build its advantage, taking a ten-point lead (16-6) on a service ace by Petranovic. SHU eventually trimmed LIU's lead to two points (24-22) but Viktoria Fink killed their rally with a successful set point attack. After giving up the first point of the deciding set, LIU took control by scoring the next seven points. SHU put up the next two points before a Matsumoto-Hansson tandem block gave the Blackbirds their eighth point and initiated the changeover. Sacred Heart attempted to close the gap, getting as close as three points four times but the Blackbirds' momentum proved to be too much.
