BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- Playing at home for the first time this season, the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team earned a 57-46 come-from-behind victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks Tuesday evening at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
Three Blackbirds reached double figures in the game, led by an 18-point effort from graduate student
Denisha Petty-Evans that was one shy of her career best. Redshirt junior
Drew Winter matched her career high nearly one year to the day as she scored 12 points while freshman
Jeydah Johnson put up a season-best 17 points and senior
DeAngelique Waithe set a new career mark with 14 rebounds.
After holding slim leads heading into the second (23-21) and third (30-28) quarters, the Blackbirds found themselves facing a deficit with ten minutes to go. Saint Peter's held LIU to seven points in both middle periods but upped their production from seven points in the second to 15 in the third to put the Blackbirds in a 43-37 hole.
The Blackbirds responded to its first bit of adversity by following the lead of their veteran guards and their fearless freshman. LIU went on a methodical 12-0 run that nearly wiped out five of the final ten minutes and by the time the game was over, the hosts had put together a 20-3 showing in the final quarter to secure their first in a home opener since beating Charlotte in the first game of the Courtyard LaGuardia Turkey Classic on November 25, 2011.
LIU will begin a four-game road trip on Friday, November 17 when the Blackbirds travel to Maryland to face UMBC. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
