Johnson scored in double digits for the third straight game and led the Blackbirds (2-2) for the first time this season by going 5-for-17 from the field and hitting two of LIU's three shots from long range. Petty-Evans settled down in the second half, scoring seven of her 11 on 3-for-5 shooting. Seniors Stylz Sanders and DeAngelique Waithe led the way for the Blackbirds with a combined 15 boards, including a team-best eight boards for Sanders. A inside score by Waithe cut Army's early lead to 6-4 before the Black Knights closed the last 6:30 of the first quarter on a 17-3 run to go into the second with a 23-7 edge. LIU's best stretch came in the second after Army took its largest lead of the first half (31-9) at the 6:53 mark. The Blackbirds would put together a 14-5 surge to trim the Black Knights' lead to 13 points (36-23). Unfortunately, LIU could not pull any closer as Army went into the half up 15 and kept the Blackbirds behind by at least that much the rest of the game. LIU struggled with its offense against Army (2-2), matching its second-lowest quarter total of seven points in three of four periods and shooting 22.0 percent from the floor. OTHER NOTES: Freshman Ella Vaatanen scored the first points of her LIU career against Army, connecting on a three-pointer at the 4:19 mark of the second quarter and adding a free throw with 1:19 left in the game.
