Women's Basketball Drops Road Matchup At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. --- Despite having three players reach double figures in scoring, the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team suffered a 69-53 defeat to the Lafayette College Leopards Saturday afternoon at the Kirby Sports Center.

Freshman Jeydah Johnson paced the Blackbirds (2-3) for the second straight game, scoring a game-high 18 points and knocking down half LIU's eight three-pointers. Redshirt junior Drew Winter set a new career high with a 15-point outing and graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans kept her season-long streak of scoring ten or more points alive with 11.

LIU played Lafayette (2-3) close for large portions of the game, posting an even first quarter (14-14) and a second half where the Blackbirds only trailed by five points. In the first, Johnson scored eight points in less than 2:30 to fuel the Blackbirds' opening 10-3 run. She finished the period with ten of LIU's 14 points, including a layup at the two-minute mark that gave LIU a 14-12 lead.

The difference in the game for LIU was Lafayette's second quarter, which saw the Leopards go from a tied first period to an 11-point halftime advantage. LIU spent the majority of the third quarter working to erase Lafayette's lead, outscoring Lafayette 16-11 in nearly seven minutes to slash the score to 38-32.

Lafayette ended the third with an 8-2 run to stretch its margin back to ten points and the Leopards kept the Blackbirds at least that far away the rest of the game.

OTHER NOTES
  • Winter's tally exceeded her previous career-high of 12 points, which she reached most recently in this year's home opener win over Saint Peter's on November 14.
  • Freshman Daisha Davis made her collegiate debut against Lafayette. The New York native checked in during the second quarter and finished the night with a block and a rebound in two minutes.
  • The Blackbirds went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. The last time LIU didn't miss from the charity stripe in a game with ten or more attempts was on February 16, 2008 in a 59-48 home conference win against Central Connecticut (11-for-11). LIU was also a perfect 8-for-8 against UMBC on November 17.

LIU will end its November schedule with a matchup at NJIT on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. in Newark, N.J.
