Volleyball Defeats St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn volleyball team completed its regular season road schedule with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-11) victory over the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers Friday afternoon at the Genovesi Center.

Juniors Viktoria Fink and Nina Petranovic each recorded a match-high 13 kills, with Petranovic adding 13 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Freshman Piper Matsumoto led all players with 17 assists and sophomore Natalia Rivera added ten digs.

LIU took a 1-0 match lead by winning the first set by the largest margin (12 points) of any set against SFBK this season. After a brief 1-1 tie, the Blackbirds scored the next five points to take a 6-1 lead. LIU would extend their lead to seven points (11-4) before St. Francis pulled as close (11-7) as they would get the rest of the set. An 7-3 run would put the Blackbirds on the brink of a double-digit lead (18-9) and a 5-1 surge at 20-12 secured the set.

The Blackbirds exceeded their opening set effort in the second by bettering their brand new scoring margin mark (15 points). The team scored four unanswered points and jumped out to an 8-1 advantage with five kills, two forced errors and a service ace. The hosts moved to within four (8-4) but LIU would double their lead by the time the score moved to 15-7 on a Petranovic kill and pushed it to ten after its next two kills (17-7). Two quick Terrier points were matched by four from the Blackbirds, who went up 21-9 and stayed ahead by ten or more the rest of the way.

Set three proved to be a bit more conservative and competitive in the early going LIU would lead by no more than three through the first 13 combined points of the set (8-5). St. Francis was forced to take a timeout after LIU scored four of the next five to grow the Blackbirds' lead to six (12-6). Out of the break, LIU added a 9-1 run to take a substantial 21-7 lead and sealed the match taking four of the next eight.
