Senior DeAngelique Waithe recorded the team's second double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 16 for the second straight game on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting and adding ten rebounds for the Blackbirds (4-5). Graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans led all LIU players with 17 points while freshman Jeydah Johnson scored 13 points and redshirt junior Drew Winter chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds. Despite shooting 87.5 percent from the free throw line (7-of-8), 50 percent from the field (13-of-26) and 50 percent from three-point range (2-of-4) in the first half, Lehigh (6-5) went into the locker room holding a slim 40-35 over the Blackbirds. Rather than be discouraged, LIU put together its best quarter of the game - 22 points on 10-for-20 shooting - to go into the fourth with a 57-53 advantage. Fourteen of LIU's points came from the hot hands of Waithe and Petty-Evans; Waithe scored half of her 16 to open the second half and Petty-Evans hitting three shots to put up six points. After LIU took its biggest lead of the game (67-60) on a pair of Winter free throws at the 2:43 mark, Lehigh made its final attempt to rally against the Blackbirds. The Mountain Hawks scored nine of the next 12 points to close the lead to one, 70-69. A quick LIU turnover gave Lehigh a chance to take the lead but the Blackbird defense forced a miss and Winter hit two more free throws to ice the game away. OTHER NOTES Waithe's numbers truly stood out against Lehigh - her 7-for-7 performance gives her the best shooting effort in the NEC and the first perfect game from a league member since Mikalah Mulrain of Robert Morris shot 8-for-8 against Wagner on January 14, 2017. Her double-double - the second for a Blackbird this year - was also the second of her career and first since a 10-point, 10-rebound effort against Sam Houston State on November 29, 2015 - also at Barclays Center. LIU as a whole showed great poise at the free throw line, posting its third-best effort of the year (14-for-16; 87.5%). Today's performance was only bested by a pair of perfect showings at UMBC (8-for-8) and at Lafayette (11-for-11). The Blackbirds' 44.8 percent clip from the floor (26-for-58) stands as the team's second-best shooting game of the year and their 42.9 percentage from three (6-for-14) is the team's new season-high from deep. With six assists in today's game, Winter has dished out at least four in all but one game this season and in five straight. LIU earned its first victory in six matchups since 2012 at the home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. NEXT UP The Blackbirds return to the Steinberg Wellness Center for the first of their final three home games in 2017 on Saturday, December 16 with a 2 p.m. matchup with Manhattan.
