Women's Basketball Loses To No. 22/20 Michigan

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team suffered a XX-XX defeat at the hands of the No. 22/20 Michigan Wolverines Saturday afternoon at the Steinberg Wellness Center.

Redshirt junior Drew Winter and graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans led the way for the Blackbirds (3-4). Winter logged team highs of 13 points (on 6-of-12 shooting) and five assists while missing the team lead in rebounds with five. Petty-Evans continued her double figure scoring streak with an additional 11 points. Both players combined for four of the Blackbirds' six steals. Senior DeAngelique Waithe added six points and a team-best six rebounds.

After a difficult first half that saw the Blackbirds fall behind 45-11, LIU came out with an inspired effort that saw them play their Big Ten visitors to a three-point margin in the final 20 minutes. LIU jumped out on a 7-2 run in the first minute of the third quarter behind a jumper by Petty-Evans, a three-pointer by Winter and a driving layup from Waithe. The quarter score for LIU improved to 9-4 after senior Stylz Sanders matched a Michigan basket with her lone field goal of the contest at the 7:10 mark. When the dust settled on the opening part of the second half, LIU had its fourth-highest scoring quarter of the season (21 points) and only saw the Wolverines add one point to their overall lead.

Winter and sophomore Seneca Richards did the heavy lifting in the fourth as the tandem tallied 13 of the team's 17 point over the final period. Winter opened the fourth with a layup and added six straight points after Petty-Evans made a close jumper at the 8:02 mark. Richards would net the final five points of what would end up being the Blackbirds' highest scoring half of the year (38 points).
