Women's Basketball Holds Off St. Francis Brooklyn, 61-59

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team came out victorious in a wild 61-59 Northeast Conference opener against local rival St. Francis Brooklyn Friday afternoon at the Steinberg Wellness Center.

The Blackbirds (5-7, 1-0 NEC) benefited from an outstanding performance by senior DeAngelique Waithe, who put up career-highs in points (19), rebounds (15) and steals (four) while matching career marks in blocks and assists with three each. Her double-double was the second of the season after she logged 16 points and ten rebounds in LIU's win over Lehigh at Barclays Center on December 10.

Aiding the winning cause were freshman Jeydah Johnson and graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans. Johnson scored 17 points for the second straight game on 50 percent shooting (6-of-12, 3-of-6 from three), four rebounds and two steals while Petty-Evans added 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

In a game that saw four ties and 16 lead changes, LIU and St. Francis (4-8, 0-1 NEC) played to half those tie scores and six lead changes in a thrilling fourth quarter. LIU entered the final period with a 51-48 but saw it immediately matched at the 8:46 mark on a Terrier three pointer. Waithe scored the next Blackbird basket on a putback of a Johnson miss to put LIU ahead 53-51 with 7:33 remaining. Two minutes later, SFBK converted on a three-point play to give the visitors a 54-53 lead.

Johnson would give LIU an answer with a Waithe-assisted jumped at the 4:55 mark to give the Blackbirds a 55-54 edge. St. Francis would knock down a three-pointer out of the final media timeout to make the score 57-55. Petty-Evans would regain the lead for the Blackbirds twice in less than 90 seconds, nailing a three-pointer with 2:51 left (58-57) and scoring on another jumper with 1:37 to go.

LIU had a chance to seal the game with under 15 seconds to go after Waithe intercepted a SFBK pass in the high post but the senior lost her handle on the ball, forcing the Terriers to attempt to beat the LIU defense one more time with nine seconds to go in the game. Waithe and her teammates remained locked in as Johnson recorded LIU's 1th steal of the night and redshirt junior Drew Winter made one of her two free throws after being fouled.

OTHER NOTES
  • Waithe recorded her double-double - the third of her career - by halftime (game-leading 15 points and 10 rebounds). Waithe was also perfect from the field (8-of-8) for the second time the year, making one more shot than she did in the Lehigh victory (7-of-7).
  • Winter assisted on seven scores against SFBK, more than doubling her assist total from the last two games (three).
  • The Blackbirds has won three of the last five matchups with the Terriers.
  • The win marks the third consecutive NEC opener the Blackbirds have won.
  • LIU scored its highest first half total against St. Francis (36) and set a new season high in field goal percentage (24-of-52, .462), besting the .450 clip the team shot at in their November 29 win at NJIT.

NEXT UP
LIU will go on its first NEC road trip of the season to begin 2018, heading to Pennsylvania to face Robert Morris (Saturday, January 6 at 1 p.m.) and Saint Francis U. (Monday, January 8 at 6 p.m.).
