George Mason Slips By Women's Basketball In Overtime

FAIRFAX, Va. --- Despite stellar nights from three of its top players and a frenetic fourth quarter rally, the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team fell to the George Mason Patriots in a 73-70 overtime thriller Thursday evening at EagleBank Arena.

Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half and 14 with under six minutes to go in regulation (57-43), the Blackbirds (3-5) used an 18-2 run to take a 61-59 lead with 29 seconds left. Freshman Jeydah Johnson, graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans and senior DeAngelique Waithe keyed the pivotal surge, scoring all but one of LIU's points in the period during a five-minute stretch. Petty-Evans sparked the run with a jumper at the 5:26 mark that cut the Blackbird deficit to 12 (57-45). After a free throw by Mason (8-2), LIU would score 12 unanswered points in a shade over three minutes.

The 12-0 run spurt started with redshirt junior Drew Winter setting up Johnson for one of her two makes from three-point range in the quarter with 4:26 on the clock to bring the score to 58-48. A Petty-Evans steal and score would shrink the Mason lead to single digits (58-50) for the first time since the end of the third period. Four strong shot attempts by Waithe would lead to three straight baskets and a free throw that cut the Patriots' advantage to one (58-57) at the 1:12 mark. A Mason free throw pushed the hosts back ahead by two (59-57) with a minute left but Johnson's second three-pointer of the period gave LIU its first lead (60-59) since the 6:57 mark of the first quarter.

Winter would hit one of two free throws to give the Blackbirds their two-point edge but after each team missed two free throws each, Mason tied the game with a driving layup with 11 seconds on the clock. LIU would get a shot at winning in regulation but Johnson's last second triple fell short.

The Patriots opened overtime with five straight points but Johnson singlehandedly put the Blackbirds back in front with a pair of three-pointers that set the score at 67-66 with 1:50 remaining.

With the score tied at 68-68, Mason would hit four straight free throws to make the score 72-68 with nine seconds left. Winter drew a foul with four seconds left and hit one of two free throws (72-69). LIU's defense forced the steal it needed as Johnson grabbed the ball and forced another Mason foul. The first-year hit her first free throw but missed the second and the Patriots would set the final margin after grabbing the defensive rebound and hitting one of two at the line.

OTHER NOTES
  • Johnson finished the game with a new team season-high with 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting. • Waithe set a new career-high with 16 points, eclipsing her previous mark of 14 that she set at Bryant on January 26, 2015. The senior matched her best field goal output from that Bryant game (seven made) and improved her percentage (7-of-10 against Mason vs 7-of-11 at Bryant).
  • Petty-Evans added 19 points in her return to George Mason, where she played her freshman season in 2013-14.
  • Winter matched her new career-high in assists with seven, tying her performance from this season at UMBC on November 17.
  • As a team, LIU posted season marks for scoring in a half (40 in the second) and steals (14) and tied their best field goal, three-point field goal & assist numbers (27, 10 and 16, respectively).
  • LIU trailed for over 35 minutes of game time, spanning from the first to the fourth quarter, between valiantly fighting back to take a late lead.
