Softball Edged By Hofstra, 4-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn softball team opened this week's three-game schedule with a 4-1 road loss to the Hofstra Pride Wednesday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

The non-conference defeat marked the third straight loss for the Blackbirds (16-25), who will return to Northeast Conference (NEC) action this Friday, April 14 with a home doubleheader against Wagner.

LIU attempted to put together a rally in the seventh after trailing throughout the game. Senior Kayla Gloady opened the inning with a single to left center and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from fellow fourth-year Shelley Procter. A single from freshman Angie Rizzi moved Gloady over to third and junior Victoria Zamora hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Gloady home. Junior Gina Bond reached base on a single that went past the shortstop and advanced Rizzi to second but the Blackbirds could not continue the momentum after junior Angie Vazquez flied out on the next at-bat.

The Blackbirds fell behind 3-0 in the second inning after Hofstra (15-17) led off the inning with a home run and added two more scores after Blackbird pitching mistakes. A one out solo home run in the fifth inning gave the Pride a 4-0 edge.

Sophomore Tallie Woodson was charged with the loss after going 1.1 innings and being charged with three earned runs. Bond led the way for LIU with a 2-for-4 afternoon while Zamora went 1-for-3 with LIU's lone RBI.
