Softball Takes Two From Bryant On Senior Day

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn softball team ended its 2017 season on a high note by sweeping its final Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader with Bryant Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds earned a 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs in the first game and rallied for a 4-2 win in the second game.

The sweep put a cap on LIU's Senior Day, as the Blackbirds honored graduating players Karlie Brady, Kayla Gloady, Alyssa Lanktree-Dotson, Kylie Mulholland, and Shelley Procter for their time as members of the LIU program.

GAME 1: LIU 7, BRYANT 3
LIU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with some clutch hitting. Sophomore Schae Dickson and junior Angie Vazquez drove in runs on back-to-back at-bats with a pair of outs.

A second inning home run by Bryant cut LIU's lead in half and started a run of three homers in the game - with the other two coming from the Blackbirds. Dickson's solo home run in the third and a two-run homer by junior Gina Bond in the fourth extended LIU's lead to 5-1.

The Bulldogs added a run off a RBI double in the top of the sixth inning before junior Victoria Zamora hit LIU's third home run of the game in the bottom half. Her two-run blast brought home the last of the Blackbirds runs and a late seventh inning home run did the same for the visitors.

Zamora (3-for-4), Dickson (2-for-4), Bond (2-for-4) and Vazquez (2-for-4) all produced multi-hit performances, with the first three each bringing home a pair of RBIs. Lanktree-Dotson saved her best performance of the year for the last of her career, pitching a complete game and striking out a team season-high six batters.

GAME 2: LIU 4, BRYANT 2
A scoreless second game through three innings saw the game's most important action happen over the next two. Bryant scored first in the top of the fourth, converting on back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles.

The Blackbirds' response in the fifth came after loading the bases on their first three batters. The Bulldogs kept LIU's last two batters from scoring by forcing fielder's choices and throwing out Blackbirds at the plate. The home team's third batter proved to be the charm, however, as Dickson hit a single that eventually plated three runs and was stretched out to third base on a throw and an error. Dickson would quickly join her teammates back in the dugout after scoring on a passed ball.
