BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn Volleyball has once again been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as a recipient of the organization's Team Academic Award.
For the 2016-17 school year, the Blackbirds were one of a record 833 teams across the collegiate, junior college, and high school ranks to earn the honor, one that has been given out by the AVCA since 1992-93. Selected teams earned the distinction by displaying excellence in the classroom during the school year, maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
LIU was one of 423 NCAA teams and 149 in Division I to be recognized for its academic success. The Blackbirds went 16-15 in 2016, winning their record tenth Northeast Conference championship with a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Sacred Heart in November.
The Blackbirds will open the 2017 campaign on the road on August 25 as part of the University of Georgia Benson Invitational in Athens, Ga.
