Women's Soccer Holds Off Hartford For Second Victory

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- In its highest scoring match of the season, the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Hartford Hawks Thursday evening at LIU Field.

The Blackbirds scored the first three goals of the game before fending off a Hartford second half rally and earning their first back-to-back victories since October 18 & 23 of 2015.

Sophomore Agape Alexander opened scoring for the Blackbirds with an unexpected goal in the 38th minute. Alexander found a shooting window along the right side of the box and took a chance on goal. Hartford keeper Maia Perez got a hand on the ball but it was not enough to stop the shot from bouncing into the net and giving LIU the lead.

Alexander's goal was a welcome bright spot to a first half that saw both teams struggle to consistently keep possession and Hartford hold advantages in shots (11 to four) and corners (four to one). LIU would quickly change the course of the match as the second half began by scoring two more goals in a less than three minutes.

Freshman Kimberly Butland notched her first career goal in the 46th minute, getting to a Josie Watson cross and slipping it past Hartford substitute keeper Stefanie Szot to put LIU up by two. Redshirt senior Jenn Peters, the team's leading scorer, joined her teammates in the goal column just two minutes and 52 seconds later (49') as put home a saved shot from junior Marian Awad before the deflected ball hit the ground.

Hartford refused to concede defeat quietly as the visiting Hawks began their rally effort in the 56th minute. Hartford's Karoline Petersen scored her team's first goal, taking a left side cross from Kaila Lozada and shooting the ball while it was still in flight. The Hawks would add another score in the 85th minute as a Julia Carr came away with a score in front of a crowded LIU net after a cross from Bridgette Alexander.

Despite pulling to within one goal, LIU's defense would keep Hartford from truly posing a threat to tie the rest of the way, limiting the Hawks to one shot after the second goal.

With the win, LIU recorded its first multi-goal match since the 2016 season finale against Fairleigh Dickinson on October 28 and its first three-goal performance since its home matchup with Mount St. Mary's a week earlier on October 21, 2016 - another 3-2 victory.
